Q

Explain the formation of a volcano

A
  1. Magma moves up to the surface of the earth through a small opening called a vent.
  2. The magma is stored underground in a magma chamber.
  3. Gases build up in the magma chamber making pressure causing the magma to erupt out of the vent through an opening called the creator.
  4. When magma reached the earths surface, it is known as lava. The lava flow cools done and hardens around the vent.
  5. Ash cloud ejects from the volcano when it erupts.
  6. After repeated eruptions, layers of ash and lava build up around the vent to form a cone-shaped mountain.

Q

Name 3 positives on volcanoes

A
  1. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source. It is generated when molten magma rises in the crust and heats the water close to the earths surface. This drives turbines in power stations to generate electricity.
  2. Geothermal energy is cheap fuel.
  3. The hot water provides hot springs and pools which are major tourist attractions.
