Rocks Flashcards
Name the 3 types of rocks
Igneous
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
How are igneous rocks formed
From cooling magma/lava
Explain how sedimentary rocks are formed
Weathering and erosion breaks down rocks into small rock fragments called sediments. These are transported to the sea by rivers, ice and wind. Sediments are deposited in seas or lakes and covered by fossils. Compression turns the sediment into sedimentary rocks.
Explain how metamorphic rocks are formed
Heat from contact with molten magma and pressure caused by folding changes the igneous rocks and sedimentary rocks into metamorphic rocks
Give 2 examples of igneous rocks
