Volcanoes Flashcards
Structure of the Earth
Inner Core –Solid
Outer Core –Fluid Iron/Nickle
Mantle – 3000 km thick hot dense rock
Convection currents
Exists in the mantle and moves heated molten material up from the core to the crust where it cools and sinks back down to the core
Plate margins
The border where two tectonic plates meet and where earthquakes are very frequent
Constructive plate margins
Where plates push apart moving away from each other and new crusts are created by molten rock or magma rises to fill the gap
Destructive plate margins
Where oceanic crusts crash into each other destroying a plate
Formation of rock types
Intrusive igneous rocks: It cools underground so cools slowly making large crystals
Extrusive igneous rock: It cools above ground so cools quickly
Sedimentary: Small particles of rock are deposited under the sea as sediment which builds up in layers
Metamorphic: Changed by either heat or pressure
Focus vs Epicentre
Focus is the point in the Earth’s crust where the earthquake occurs
Epicentre is the point on the earth’s surface directly above the focus, where the effects are felt first
