Q

Case studies MEDC urban area

A

The urban regeneration of the Titanic Quarter improved the housing in the area. Energy-efficient, purpose built apartment blocks called ‘The Arc’have been built and have fast become the most sought after sites in the city. They feature modern waste disposal and green technology. 5000 new apartments are to be developed on site with convenient access to the centre of Belfast. Public Transport links were also developed with dedicated Glider bus services operating every 12 minutes from Wellington Place at peak times. Cycle and walking routes were also developed to form part of the Comber Greenway improving recreational opportunities in the area. The new Titanic Quarter railway station has also improved commuter access

Q

Case Study Shanty towns

A

Kolkata is located in India.
The location of Shanty Towns in Kolkata are in the centre of the city. They live here because old buildings have become derelict and the local council don’t want the land as it is useless for any further development. They also locate there because the housing dates back 150 years and is poor quality so better off people don’t want it.
Shanty towns can also be found around industries and at road and rail intersections.
They are also found along roads and railways where they started growing around 60 years ago.
This land is not desirable for richer people so poor migrants will tolerate noise and danger for children along transport routes.

More recent shanty towns are located on previously unoccupied lands especially to the east of the city. Some places along the River Hoogly are swampy and difficult to build housing. Other parts are prone to flooding so land is free for migrants to build on.

Recently more shanty towns are located near Dhapa Landfill site in the east of the city. The poor migrants see the site as a resource where they pick through rubbish to find materials of use or value. Well off residents would not want to live there as it is smelly, dirty, noisy unhygienic etc.
