Inner City Areas MEDC Flashcards
Urban regeneration
Governments spend new money to improve the area to attract new businesses and create new jobs. Part of this involves older buildings (factories, houses etc) being renovated into apartments
Advantages; Improves the look of the area making business more likely to take interest, new services are likely to be opened in regenerated areas, maintains old architecture
Disadvantages; Gentrification (pushing original communities out of regenerated areas), new cafés are only useful to new residents, jobs created often aren’t suited for original residents
Housing
Terraced houses were initially built for factory workers. They give limited space for children playing
Older buildings are inefficient as they lack proper insulation and cavity wall causing dampness
Rundown houses became slums that were demolished in the sixties, they were built back to back and had no garden or backdoor and had a shared bedroom
Some houses need renovated eg more bathrooms
The houses were built when there was no cars, now streets are busy, narrow and dangerous for children
Communities in these areas decline as many people move out, unemployment rises due to closing factories
Traffic
Traffic is often congest in inner-city areas as;
Streets are narrow since they were built for people not cars
Inner-city residents often have no garages or driveways meaning they have to park on the road
People driving through may park on inner-city streets to avoid parking charges
Impact on air quality and journey time
Diesel engines produce particulates which can be fatal if breathed in
Nitrogen dioxide emissions cause 23,500 premature deaths per year
In London congestion adds to 1.4 minutes per kilometre
Congestion in London costs £4billion a year as business vehicles are delayed in traffic jams
Increase in journey time creates more pollution
Cities are trying to lower carbon emissions to improve air quality
Parking
Cost; Inner-city parking may add up to be expensive, residents may have to pay for resident only parking, fees for parking illegal may be very high
Availability; Residents who don’t have driveways will have to park on the road, drivers may circle around looking for a parking space creating more congestion and pollution, residents may struggle to get a space as commuters may park in the inner-city
