Who is Vygotsky?
Was a russian psychologist, his work was not published in England untill after his death
What was a diffrence btwee Piaget and Vygotsky?
Piaget saw the child as a scientist whereas Vygotsky saw the child as an apprentice.
What were the two main influences of a childs development that vygotsky focused on?
Social interaction and language.
What were similarities between Piaget and Vygotsky?
They both saw children as curious problem soving beings who play an active part in their own developmet
Finger pointing evidence from Vygotsky
Initally this behaviour begins as a meaningless gesture however as peple react to the gesture it becomes a movment that has meaning. In particular the pointing gesture represents an interpersonal connection between individuals.
What is the first stage of speech developmet according to Vygotsky?
Social speech
What is social speech?
In this stage a child uses speech to control the behaviour of others. A child uses speech to express simple thoughts and emotions. EG- ‘I want milk’
What is the second stage of Vygotskys speech development theory?
Egocetric speech
What is Egocntric speech?
Found in three to seven year olds. Children often tal to themselves regardless of someone listening to them.They may speak about what they are doing as they doing it.
What is the third stage of Vygotsky’s stages of speech development?
Inner speech
What is Inner speech in regards ro Vygotskys stages of speech development?
This is the final stage of speech development. used by adults and older children .This type of speech allows us to direct our thinking and behaviour and are able to engage in all forms of higher mmental function.
What is the Zone of Proximal development (ZPD).
The gap between what a child can do unaided and what a child can do with help. EG- this is the diffrence between thier current ability and their potential ability.
What is a more knowladgable other?
Anyone with a greater understanding of the task or concept that the child is trying to complete or learn.
What is scaffolding?
The breaing down of infomation or parts of a new skill into pieces that are digestable to the learner.
What did Wertsch find? (evidence for ZPD)
He found that the amount of time chilldren under the age of 5 spent looking at their mothers when assembling jigsaws decreasd with age.
