Vocabulary Part 6 Flashcards
Ogham Scripts
Alphabetic System used in writing Old Irish texts in the British Isles. Particularly used for genealogical inscriptions on stone slabs. Usually written top to bottom, but sometimes seen horizontally. Consists of line or dots on a (typically) horizontal axis.
Over Differentiated Script
A relationship between writing and language where some orthographic distinctions do not correspond to any phonological contrasts (issue in the inuktitut adaptation of cree syllabics)
Under-Differentiated Script
A relationship between writing and language in which some phonological contrasts are not indicated in the writing of that language. (issue in the inuktitut adaptation of cree syllabics)
Cherokee Syllabic Script
Syllabic script that represents mora. Used to write the Cree language. Created by James Evans based partially on his earlier script for Ojibwe. The direction a symbol faces indicates the vowel quality.
Rongorongo Script
Undeciphered form of writing/proto-writing from Easter Island. Uses boustrophedon. Possibly a mix of morphographic and phonetic symbols.
Greeklish
Greek written in the Roman Alphabet, often used on the internet, varies greatly by individual user, is not standardized in personal use, although there is a version the Greek government uses. Controversial as some feel it is an erosion and threat to the Greek Alphabet. Example: writing klnxt (for kalinixta (καληνύχτα), meaning “goodnight”)
