Stimulus Diffusion
Borrowing the basic idea of writing with a systematic set and rules, but not any specific symbols
Writing
The systematic use of graphic marks to represent specific linguistic utterances. Assumed to be visual, have auto-indexality, conventionality, and to ideally be language neutral
Allograph (Maya)
A non-contrastive unit in a writing system- numerous signs with distinct forms that represent the same mora (Maya has a notorious amount of allographs)
Diacritic (alphabets, abugidas, Maya)
A bound graphemes that modifies the value of the basic symbol to which it is attached
Alphabets: tone or pronunciation differences
Abugidas: indicate vowel quality of that vowel is not the basic /a/
Maya: attached to side of a sign, often a phonological compliment
Bound Graphemes (abugidas)
Graphemes that only occurs in combination with other graphemes, often a diacritic (vowel diacritics in abugidas)
Free Graphemes (abugidas)
Graphemes that can occur independently (consonant signs with default vowel in abugidas)
Diglossia
High and low varieties of a language both used in one language community (Arabic and Finnish)
Glottographic writing system
A writing system used to transcribe the linguistic units (morphemes or phonemes) or a certain language
Phonographic writing system
Writing whose graphemes correspond to phonological units of a language
Morphogenetic writing system
Writing whose graphemes typically represent morphemes
