Palatography
Experimental method that shows the contact between the tongue and the roof of the mouth
Impressionistic phonetic transcription
A method of writing own speech sounds with the intent of capturing how they are pronounced
Bilabial
consonants that are made by bringing both lips closer together
Labiodental
consonants that are made with the lower lip against the upper front teeth
Interdentals
Made with the tip of the tongue protruding between the front teeth
Alveolar
Sounds that are made with the tongue tip at or near the alveolar ridge.
Post-alveolar
Sounds that are made a bit further back; they are made right at the front of the hard palate
Palatal
Sounds that are made with the tongue near the center of the hard portion of the roof of the mouth
Velar
Consonants that are produced at the soft part of the roof of the mouth behind the hard palate
Glottal
Sounds that are produced at the larynx
Affricates
Made by briefly stopping the airstream completely and then releasing the articulators slightly so that frication noise is produced
Uvula
The very back of the roof of the mouth
Airstrream mechanism
Any of the various ways to produce a stream of moving air through the vocal tract for the production of speech sounds
Segment
The individual units of the speech stream; they can be further subdivided into consonants and vowels
Pitch accents
A change in fundamental frequency used to put prominence on a particular word in an utterance
