Chronicles
Epic’s database management system. Chronicles keeps track of all the information about your patients, providers, procedures, and more. Chronicles groups data into master files.
Hyperspace
the interface you’ve used to document imaging exams and information. Hyperspace does not store data. It is in constant communication with Chronicles.
Master files
collect information about one aspect of Epic, like users who work at your organization or procedures that are performed there. INI: User master file = EMP
Record
a collection of information about one department makes up that department’s record. Records can interface with one another. INI: DEP = Department master file
Data type
date, number, selection from list. icon identifies, ex: calculator
Contact
a date-specific version of a record. A new contact is created with every encounter (visit)
EPT
Patient master file
EMP
User master file
Item
a question within a record. The same in each record.
Value
the answer within a record. The values distinguish individual records.
Both ____ and ____ communicate with chronicles to file and retrieve data.

view a list of records in a given master file. Enter this at a record prompt like Procedure or Provider/Resource
F1
erase all values for the field or row
F2
erase the portion of the value from the cursor to the end of the field
F3
restore the information in this field to the value when you entered this field
F4
enter a comment
Shift+F7
exit a record to return to the master file record prompt, or exit a menu to return to the previous menu
Shift+F5
show a help window for information about the item on which the cursor is resting. If this is a category item, a category list will be displayed. If this is a networked item, a list of all records in the networked master file will be displayed
Page down
move to the top of the next screen
Page up
move to the top of the previous screen
Home then F8
shows the INI and item number for the field
Home then F9
access screen fast forward, which lets you jump to a particular screen number, item number, or search for a field by completion matching within a record
Chaining
combining menu prompts to jump to a specific place
