Vocabulary Flashcards
nucleus
A particle the center of the atom
Atom
The makeup of everything in the world
Proton
Subatomic Positively charged particles
Neutron
Partials with a zero charge
Electrons
Subatomic Partials with a negative charge
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down
Isotope
Atoms with a different amount of neutrons but the same amount of protons, they are from the same element
Compound
The result of combining two elements
Covalent bond
The bond when two electrons are shared between two atoms
Molecule
Substance formed by covalent bonds
Ion
The end result of the atom that just lost or gained electrons
Ionic bond
The bond between ions that have opposite charges
Chemical reaction
The result of different elements forming something new
Activation energy
The least amout of energy needed to start something with the atom
Catalyst
Changes (lowers most of the time) the activation reaction
Enzymes
Special proteins that are used to break down food
Substrates
When the atoms come together they call this
Active site
The location of where the substrates are
Polar molecules
Molecules that are uneven
Hydrogen bond
A reaction involving a hydrogen atom and an oxygen atom, Florine, or nitrogen atoms
Mixture
A mix of things where each thing keeps its own properties
Solution
Homogeneous mix
Solvent
The part of the mixture that can dissolve things
Solute
The thing that dissolves
