Genetics And Human Herdity Flashcards
If Mendel crossed purebred tall pea plants with purebred short pea plants in the F1 produced all tall plants, what would this suggest about this type of inheritance
It is a type of recessive inheritance, the short plant is the recessive gene
Why were peas a good choice for Mendel’s work?
Because the plants could be cross pollinated by hand easily, even though they would normally reproduce by self polinating
An organisms allele pairs?
Genotype
Observable characteristic that is expressed as a result of an allelic pair
Phenotype
Alternate form that a single gene might have for a particular trait
Allele
An organism with two of the same alleles for a specific trait
Homozygous
Organism with two different alleles for a specific trait
Heterozygous
This helps predict the possible offspring of a cross between two known genotypes. This make it easier to keep track of the possible genotypes involved in a cross.
Punnent square
Mendel’s two laws
- Mendel’s law of assortment
2. Law of segregation
Explain the law of assortment
linked genes usually do not segregate independently
Explain law of segregation
states that the two alleles for each trait separate during meiosis. During fertilization, two alleles for that trait unite.
A cross such as this one that involves hybrids for a single trait
Monohybrid cross
simultaneous inheritance of two or more traits in the same thing
Dihybrid cross
Diagrammed family history that is used to study inheritance patterns of a trait throughout several generations and can be used to predict disorders in future offspring
Pedigree
Individual heterozygous for a recessive disorder
Carrier
