American Federation of Labor
Was established in December of 1886. Led by Samuel Gompers, the craft unions established the American Federation of Labor. They fought for better wages, shorter working hours, safe conditions, and other benefits for workers. They used strikes in order to gain these things.
Salvation Army
William and Catherine Booth founded the Salvation Army. Its founders sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting both their “physical and spiritual needs”. Established July 2, 1865 in London. It provided aid to soldiers during the Great Depression and both world wars.
Jane Addams
Jane Addams was a social worker, author, and reformer. She is known for her Hull House. The Hull House provided child care, practical and cultural training and education, and other services to the largely immigrant population of its Chicago neighborhood. Was born in Sept. of 1860. She became one of the faces of womens suffarage and became the first woman to ever win a nobel peace prize.
Credit Mobilier Scandal
The Union Pacific Railroad and the Crédit Mobilier of America construction company. A two part fraud scandal. From 1864-1867. It transpired in the building of the eastern portion of the first transcontinental railroad. The scandal negatively affected the careers of many politicians and nearly bankrupted Union Pacific.
Teller Amendment
Senator Henry M. Teller of Colorado proposed it, disclaiming any intention to control Cuba. Congress passed the amended joint resolution on April 19. President William McKinley signed it on April 20. It proclaimed that the United States would help the Cuban people gain their freedom from Spain but would not annex the island after victory.
