Encomienda-

A

The encomienda system was created by the Spanish between the 16th and 17th century. It was when the king gave the labor of certain American Indian groups to individual settlers for life (they were forced into slavery for Spanish benefit). It was created to provide an incentive for conquistadors to conquer new territories and to provide free labour to extract wealth from the colonies.
