Protestant Reformation?
A religious movement that swept through Europe in the 1500s. Started by Martin Luthor. When Martin Luthor nailed his 95 thesis on the door of the church. That decision was influenced by people’s opposition/disdain to the way the church was run.
Hernando de Soto?
Hernando de Soto was an explorer. He was mostly known for his exploration of North America in 1541. He was sent with 600 men by the King and Queen of Spain.
Ponce de Leon?
Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. He is credited leading the first expedition to Florida in 1513. In pursuit of a rumored fountain of youth, thinking he found an island, he would eventually return back and colonize the land.
St. Augustine?
In 1565, St. Augustine was founded. It was founded by Spanish explorers. Its importance is that it’s the oldest known continually occupied settlement of European and African American origin.
Francisco Coronado?
Francisco Coronado was a Spanish explorer who explored the southwest United States. Allegedly, he was looking for the fabled Seven Cities of Gold. His expeditions resulted in the discovery of many physical landmarks, including the Grand Canyon, around the time of 1540.
Hernando Cortez?
Hernando Cortez was a popular expeditioner. Cortez is known for conquering the Aztecs and claiming Mexico on behalf of Spain in 1521. It was said that he was eager for God, gold, and glory.
Vasco da Gama?
Gama is responsible for finding the first trading route to India, where well known Christopher Columbus was intending to go, in 1947. He did what those before him failed to do. He was initially in search of a maritime route from Western Europe to the East.
Christopher Columbus?
Christopher Columbus is an Italian explorer who was given credit for finding and colonizing the United States. He reported to have done this on October 12, 1492. Columbus wanted to find a new route to India, and that’s exactly where he thought he was.
Francisco Pizarro?
Pizzarro is known for being an explorer and a conquer. Most notably for conquering the Inca Empire and founding the city of Lima in 1532. He did this in hopes of spreading Christianity and bringing his country lots of riches.
Ferdinand Magellan?
Ferdinand was a well known explorer during his time. Magellan was known for masterminding the first expedition to circumnavigate the world on September 20, 1519. His motive for his exploration was South-East Asia, where spices grew and gems were to be found.
Aztecs?
The Aztecs were a Mesoamerican culture that flourished in central Mexico in the post-classic period from 1300 to 1521. However they initially called themselves the Mexica. Itzcoatl’s successor Montezuma (Moctezuma) I, who took power in 1440, was a great warrior who was remembered as the father of the Aztec empire.
Iroquois?
The Iroquois was made up of 5 different tribes.
The founders of League are traditionally held to be Dekanawida the Great Peacemaker, Hiawatha, and Jigonhsasee the Mother of Nations, whose home acted as a sort of United Nations.
Incas?
the Inca was founded by Manco Capac in the village of Paqari-tampu, about 15 miles (south of Cuzco). (Manqo Qhapaq), led the tribe to settle in Cuzco, which remained thereafter their capital. Their contributions to religion, architecture, and their famous network of roads throughout the region are part of their importance in American history
Columbian Exchange?
In 1492, Columbus brought the Eastern and Western Hemispheres back together. The resulting swap of Old and New World germs, animals, plants, peoples, and cultures has been called the “Columbian Exchange.”
Treaty of Tordesillas?
It was developed in 1494 by the king and queen of Castille and Portugal. The Treaty of Tordesilla was an agreement between Spain and Portugal dividing the rights to colonize all lands outside of Europe.
