Vocal tract
entire passage above the larynx
Articulators
all parts of the vocal apparatus which are involved in speech production
Place of articulation
point of closest constriction in the vocal tract
Bilabial
sounds created involving both lips constricting
Vocal cords
two small muscular folds located at the lower end of the larynx
Diphthongs
vowel sounds in which there is a change in auditory quality within a single syllable
Monophthong
simple vowel sounds with no change in auditory quality within a single syllable
Phonetics
the study and classification of speech sounds.
International Phonetic Alphabet IPA
the most well-known and standardised transcription system
Stops
sounds that are produced with a complete stop of airflow followed by a release
Plosives
a speech sound, the basic plosives in English are t, k, and p (voiceless) and d, g, and b (voiced).
Affricates
a phoneme which combines a plosive with an immediately following fricative or spirant sharing the same place of articulation, e.g. ch as in chair and j as in jar.
Approximants
speech sounds that involve the articulators approaching each other but not narrowly enough nor with enough articulatory precision to create turbulent airflow
Liquid
a consonant sound in which the tongue produces a partial closure in the mouth, resulting in a resonant, vowel-like consonant, such as English l and r.
Glottis
the part of the larynx consisting of the vocal cords and the opening between them. It affects voice modulation through expansion or contraction.
