VOCAB LIST 2 Flashcards
change of a substance from a liquid to a gas
evaporation
change of state from a gas to a liquid
condensation
evaporation of water from plants
transpiration
the burning of a substance
combustion
the replacement of one type of community by another at a single place over a period of time.
succession
variety of living things in a certain area
biodiversity
large region characterized by a specific type of climate and certain types of plant and animal communities.
biome
also known as coniferous forest. has trees with pines and leaves with a thick, waxy coating. average temp = 14 degrees C in summer, -10 degrees C in winter. Has finches, elk, porcupines, chickadees, etc.
taiga
a treeless plain found in the Arctic, in the Antarctic, or on the tops of mountains that is characterized by very low winter temps and short, cool summers.
tundra
a grassland that often has scattered trees and is found in tropical and subtropical areas where seasonal rains, fires, and droughts occur.
savanna
a wetland ecosystem in which shrubs and trees grow
swamp
a treeless wetland ecosystem where plants such as grasses grow
marsh
an area where fresh water from rivers mixes with salt water from the ocean.
estuary
shedding/casting off an outer layer or covering and the formation of its replacement.
molting
organism that synthesizes its own food
autotroph
organism that can’t synthesize its own food and is dependent on complex organic substances.
heterotroph
a layer of soil that is frozen all year-round in a polar tundra
permafrost
the zone, at high altitudes or latitudes, beyond which no trees grow
tree line
a phase between 2 months of molting in the development of an insect larva or other invertebrate animal
instar
the mass of mostly microscopic organisms that float/drift freely in freshwater and marine environments. Uses photosynthesis to make own food.
plankton
a combination of algae and fungus that often grows on trees, rocks, and walls.
lichens
trees that lose their leaves in Autumn
deciduous
trees that remain green all year-round
coniferous
layer of water in between surface and deep zone. 300-700m below sea level. water temp. drops faster with depth than other 2 zones.
thermocline.
treetops in a tropical rain forest
