The scholars in the old days believed that the world was flat. That was a “fallacy”.
Fallacy - a mistaken idea; a failure in reasoning which makes an argument invalid
SYNONYM: error, falsity, fault, flaw, misconception
The soldier’s leg was wounded in battle. The medical treatment was not enough and the leg “festered”. To save the soldier’s life, the surgeon had to amputate his leg.
Fester - to be in a state of progressive rotting or deterioration
SYNONYM: decay, putrefy, suppurate
The chef decorated the cake with such “finesse” that the guests were admiring the creation instead of eating it..
Finesse - refinement, skillful handling; delicate maneuvering
SYNONYM: delicacy, tact, taste
The Spanish sent a “flotilla” to scout the waters and spy on the French.
Flotilla - a small fleet
SYNONYM: armada, fleet, naval force
The carpenter found it hard to make money because his business was always in a state of “flux”.
Flux - a state of constant change
SYNONYM: change, flow, fluidity, instability, motion, mutability, unrest
The mayor’s reputation to help people forego his decision to run again. The people asked him to run again and he won!
Forego- to precede as in time or place
SYNONYM: antecede, antedate, precede, predate
The doctor decided to forgo his normal fees to treat and heal the homeless man.
Forgo - to give up, do without
SYNONYM: abandon, abdicate, abjure, abstain, cede, desist, eschew, forbear, forsake, refrain, resign, resist
The poor children living on the streets looked so “forlorn” that it made my heart weep to see their desperation.
Forlorn - hopeless; inconsolable
SYNONYM: blue, cheerless, comfortless, depressed, desolate, despairing, despondent, disconsolate, forsaken, miserable, woebegone
The “fraternal” camaraderie in the police department was their strength. They watched out for each other.
Fraternal - companionable like brothers
SYNONYM: brotherly, congenial, friendly
Make sure not to “fraternize” with the mafia. They are a dangerous lot.
Fraternize - to socialize, mingle; to be friendly, associate with
SYNONYM: associate, mingle, mix
The “genteel” nobles in the countryside were not really nice. They appeared to be genteel when in reality they were cruel and coarse.
Genteel - sophisticated, cultured
SYNONYM: aristocratic, chivalrous, courtly, cultivated, elegant, polished, refined, urbane, well-bred
The doctor did his Ph.D in “gerontology” where he interviewed hundreds of senior citizens for his research. He also met specialists who were also work in “geriatrics”.
Gerontology - study of aging and problems of aging
Geriatrics - a branch of medicine that deals with the problems and diseases of old age and aging people — compare gerontology
The crowd goaded Jim into a fight on the street. Jim found himself punching the man who pushed him into the wall.
Goad - to egg on, incite
SYNONYM: arouse, coerce, drive, encourage, exhort, instigate, irritate, needle, prod, prompt, provoke, spur, stimulate, urge
Sheena was a “gourmand” who loved to use unusual ingredients to make the most delectable cupcakes. Her gourmet cupcakes were very popular.
Gourmand - a lover of good food; a glutton
SYNONYM: bon vivant, gastronomist, hog, overeater
The mayor had “grandiose” plans to build the world’s tallest building in his city. But he failed to keep the city safe.
Grandiose - so big as to be unreal; exaggerated, uncommonly large
SYNONYM: haughty, pompous, pretentious, showy
