Metis
One of Canada’s most distinct and unique groups. Métis is “mixed” in French. Their culture is a mix of French and aboriginal. Fur traders married aboriginal women
Collective Identity
The shared identity of a group of people, especially because of a common language or culture
Right
Legal or moral entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way
Freedom
The power/right to act think or speak as one wants without restraint
Constitution
Set sout the framework for how Canada is governed. It is the highest law in Canada. Protects individual rights and freedoms. Can challenge laws that restrict the rights.
Constituency
Area that an MP represents. A body of voters in a specific area
Indian Act 1876
Brought in by the federal government as a way to control first nations without consulting them. Racist, our way of life was better than theirs, paved the way for residential schools. Had an Indian agent who oversaw everything on the reserve restricting first nations fundamental freedoms
First Past The Post
Canada’s electoral system of winner takes all, do not need majority of votes to win
Assimilation
The process by which a person acquires the social and psychological characteristics of a group/ adapt to a group
Ethnocentrism
Evaluation of a culture believing that’s ones own culture is superior
