Constitution of Alberta Amendment Act
1990 forms part of the Constitution of Alberta. This Act recognizes the presence of Metis when Alberta was formed and indicates that Metis should have a land base to provide for the preservation and enhancement of Metis culture and identity .
Metis Settlement Accord Implementation Act
Establishes the protection of 1.25 million acres of settlement lands, the development of local government and provincial financial commitments
Metis Settlements Act
Establishes eight settlements. Transfers title of the settlements to the Métis people and to provide constitutional protection of the lands
Metis Settlements Land Protection Act
Confirmed the transfer of land from the Provincial Crown to the Metis Settlements General Council
1982
Metis lobbied hard for recognition of their rights when the Constitution was repatriated. Section 35 now includes the Metis people of Canada

Louis Riel led the Northwest Resistance in what is now Sask. Sent petitions to gov about land rights but were unanswered, felt threatened by railway and settlers. Able to organize a group of aboriginal and Metis forces to hold their settlement
