Vocab Flashcards
Dynamic equilibrium
There is continuous movement but no overall change
Facilitated diffusion
Uses transport proteins to move other ions and small molecules across the plasma membrane
Osmosis
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
Isotonic solution
When a cell is in a solution that has the same concentration of water and solutes as it is
Hypotonic solution
When a cell is placed in a solution that has lower concentration of a solute
Hypertonic solution
Concentration of solute outside of the cell is higher than inside
Active transport
The movement of substances across the plasma membrane against a concentration gradient requires energy
Diffusion
The net movement of particles from an area where there are many barnacles of the substance to an area where there are fewer particles of the same substance
Endocytosis
Moves the large particles into the cell membrane surrounds it and then pinches away from the rest of the membrane and enters the cell
Exocytosis
Opposite of endocytosis;excretes substances from the cell
