Vocab #2 Flashcards
Cell Body (soma)
Responsible for maintaining the cell’s health and metabolic ( or chemical processes that help maintain life) functions
Cell Membrane
Provides protection for a cell
Terminal Buttons
Responsible for sending the signal on to other neurons
Myelin Sheath
Allows electrical impulses (transmission of information) to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells
Axon
Responsible for transmitting messages from the neuron to other cells in the body, ensuring communication within the nervous system
Dendrite
Receives information from other neurons, called pre-synaptic neurons, or from the environment
Synaptic Vesicles
Synapses connect one neuron to another and are thus responsible for the transmission of messages from the nerves to the brain and vice versa.
Neurotransmitters
Carries chemical signals (“messages”) from one neuron (nerve cell) to the next target cell ( another nerve cell, a muscle cell or a gland )
Nucleus
Serves both as the repository of genetic information and as the cell’s control center
Oligodendrocyte
Ensures nerve functions travel quickly and efficintly through the central nervous system colaborating with the Mylein Sheath.
