Vlans Flashcards
What are VLANs
Break up broadcast domains in a switched internetwork by assigning smaller broadcast domains to ports
Its a logical grouping of network users and resources connected to a port on a switch
What is QoS
Refers to a way resources are controlled so quality of service is maintained
Prioritizes traffic levels, data flow
What are five problems that can affect data?
Delay, dropped packet, error, jilter, out of order delivery
Static vlan
Secure, vlan associated ports will always maintain unless changed port assignments manually
Manual vlan assignment with broadcast ip’s
Dynamic vlan
Determines a host vlan assignment automatically of you attach a host to an umassigned port
The vlan managment data base can loop up hardware address and assign + configure correct vlan
Functions of an access port vlan
Carries and supports traffic of only one vlan
Can’t communicate with other vlans unless they are routed
What is a trunked port vlan?
Make a single port part of a whole bunch of vlans
All vlans can communicate
All interfaces must be trunked (device to device)
What is VLAN trunking protocol (vtp)
Manages configured vlans accross a switched internetwork
Vtp allows you to add, delete, and rename data
Helps maintain updates and consistency throughout network
List the 3 Vtp modes of operations and their function
Server- need one server, where you update vlan information
Client mode- receives info and updates from server
Transparent- doesnt participate in vlan domain, has own private data base. They can still forward vtp advertizements though configures trunk links
What is a default gateway
Used to send management traffic to a remote network
The default gateway should be the router interface address assigned to each vlan
