Network Cabling Flashcards
Describe copper cable
Twisted pair. Pairs of conductors/wires work together & are twisted around each other over the length of the cable
What are the 2 main types of copper cable?
Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP)
What are the common categories of copper cable?
3, 5, 5e, 6, 6a, 7
Cat 5e and higher used on all modern LANs
What does a higher category copper cable mean?
More twists per foot, more expensive, more immune to interference, higher bandwidth
What are some advantages to copper cable?
Relatively inexpensive Flexible Easy installation Spans significant distances Accommodates multiple topologies
Describe UTP
4 pairs (8 conductors)
Colour coded
Plastic outer jacket
Cat 6 and higher has a plastic core
Describe STP
Colour coded
Different types of shielding
Foil wrapped cable or individual pairs
Maybe braided overall shield
What is the RJ45 technically called
8 pin 8 conductor (8P8C)
Compare STP to UTP
Throughput is the same
STP more expensive
STP more noise resistant
Both have max length of 100m
What are the standards for proper cable termination?
TIA/EIA 568A
TIA/EIA 568B
What do you use straight through cable for?
Computer
Router to switch
What do you cross over cable for?
Like devices
What do you use rollover cable for?
Computer to console port
Describe fibre optic cable
Has glass or plastic core. Pairs of fibres work together to transmit and receive
What are the types of fibre optic cable?
Single Mode Fibre (SMF)
Multi Mode Fibre (MMF)
