1
Q

A

Used to break up collision domains (software)

Now router creates logical segmentation while swicthes uses physical

What are switches?

A

Independent bandwidth on each port
Private, dedicated collision domains, low latency, low cost, harware based (ASIC)
No modification to data packet

Q

What are the differences and similarities of bridges and switches

A

Bridges- soft ware based
Switches- hardware; ASIC chips help male filtering decisions
Switches can be used as a multiport bridge
Both- make forwarding decisions based on layer 2, and send layer 2 broadcasts
Both learn MAC address by examining source address of frame received
