Viva prep Flashcards

1
Q

Importance of Good alignment

A

muscles work better in midrange
alignment facilitates normal movement
prevents shortening of muscles and contractures, joint stiffness, therefore reducing pain

Q

splinting

A

prevents contracture
prevents loss of ROM
alter afferent feedback of overactive muscles
assists with management of pain
enable or improve function
offers stability to the joints and muscles, thus protecting integrity

Q

neuroplasticity

A

new connections are being formed within the CNS as quickly as 5 days post CVA
repetition of movements and postures that reflect symmetry and balance is key to developing efficient movement
sprouting and recruitment of latent synapses from new neural connections bypassing the damaged area

Q

effect of age on recovery

A

Hessian stroke data bank
functional recovery slightly faster in younger patients, depends more on the extent of the initial disability
advanced age should not be seen as a limiting factor for early rehabilitation of stroke patients

Q

What does sitting someone up against gravity do?

A

stimulates ARAS which is ascending reticular activating system. This will switch on alertness and conscious levels

Q

Modified Ashworth Scale

A

0: no increase in muscle tone
1: slight increase in tone, catch at the end of ROM
2: slight increase in tone, catch half way through ROM with minimal resistance
3: increase in muscle tone through most of the ROM
4: PROM is difficult due to a significant increase in tone
5: rigid in flexion or extension

Q

Shoulder Subluxation

A

Partial dislocation of a shoulder
When the muscles around the shoulder become paralyzed or week after stroke, it can cause the arm to become dislocated from the shoulder socket.
Electrical Stimulation helps to activate the muscles around the arm
can use a sling but it is very passive and difficult to facilitate
80% of people who have a stroke have one

Q

What medication helps to treat high tone?

A

Tizanidine: anti-spastic medication which works by blocking the pain nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. Its effects are short lasting so it can be used when needed.

Q

Why is the shoulder susceptible to dislocation?

A

has the greatest range of movement, making it much less stable
weakness of the muscles around the shoulder
continued weakness causes the humeral head (ball of the humerus) to shift out of the socket (glenoid cavity) in an inferior direction.
gravity pulling the weight of the humerus downward

Q

What are your core muscles?

A

traverse abdominis (TVA), erector spinae, obliques and your lower lats. These muscles work as stabilizers for the entire body.
