what are the causes of vitreous haemrrhage

A

Acute posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), a/w either a retinal tear or avulsion of a peripheral vessel

Proliferative retinopathy (2’ to neovascularisation) (spontaneous rupture of abnormal vessels)

  • Diabetic (PDR)
  • Retinal vein occlusion (RVO), e.g. ischaemic CRVO
  • Sickle cell disease

Miscellaneous retinal disorders

  • Macroaneurysm
  • Telangiectasia
  • Capillary haemangioma

Trauma (rupture of normal vessels)

Systemic

  • Bleeding disorders
  • Terson syndrome (refers to the combination of intraocular and subarachnoid haemorrhage secondary to intracranial aneurysmal rupture)
