What are the causes of subconjunctival haemorrhage?

A
  • Trauma -> if present, must check for other trauma related injuries
  • Spontaneous (may not be able to identify precipitating event)
  • -> HTN
  • -> Valsalva, constipation/straining/chronic cough, heavy lifting
  • -> Anticoagulants, antiplatelet use
  • -> Systemic bleeding disorder

sudden onset red eye, **painless, no ocular symptoms

patch of bright red haemorrhage (usually cannot see underlying sclera), usually sectorial w feathery border (well-demarcated anterior & posterior limits), superficial

what is the management of subconjunctival haemorrhage?

A
  • Reassure pt - self-resolving in 2-3 weeks, no significant sequelae, no vision loss
  • Treat underlying causes (e.g. HTN, bleeding disorder)
