vitamins Flashcards
what is the definition of vitamins
organic substances, small amounts of which are essential for life
what do deficiencies lead to?
dry eyes,
night blindness
Scurvy
Rickets
what can co enzymes be called?
metals or small organic molecules
how do you make holoenzyme
holoenzyme
what is the 3 stages of cellular metabolism
Stage 1: Breakdown of complex molecules to their component building blocks
Stage 2: Conversion of building blocks to acetyl-CoA (or other simple intermediates)
Stage 3: Metabolism of acetyl-CoA to CO2 and formation of ATP
explain stage one of the cellular metabolsim
Proteins are broken down into amino acids.
Starches are broken down into single sugars.
Lipids are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol
explain stage 2 of the cellular metabolism
The amino acids, single sugars, and fatty acids and glycerol are then converted into acetyl-CoA
This process releases some molecules of ATP as well as some molecules of CO2
explain stage 3 of the ceullar metabolsim
The acetyl-CoA then enters the citric acid cycle this is to create energy
more ATP is produced, and more CO2 is released as a waste product
the cycle also contributes to the ETC
