Vitamins Flashcards
What is the difference between vitamins and minerals
you need vitamins in small amounts but minerals in large amounts
why are vitamins and minerals important?
required by the body for good health and for prevention of diet-related diseases
what is the difference between fat soluble and water soluble vitamins?
water - required in frequent amounts, dissolves in water, body cannot store them, deficiencies are possible
fat - not required as frequently, dissolves in fat/oil, body stores them, deficiencies are less common
what is the function of B1?
acts as a coenzyme that assist enzymes in the breakdown of glucose for energy production
what is the function of B2?
acts as a coenzyme involved in the metabolism of macronutrients
what is the function of B3?
acts as a coenzyme in the catabolism and anabolism of macronutrients
what is the function of B12 and what is the deficiency?
works as a coenzyme in DNA synthesis and in metabolism of macronutrients to produce energy (works with folate)
deficiency in B12 is anaemia caused from poor absorption of B12
what is the function of B9 (folate) and what is the deficiency?
helps metabolise or break down macronutrients to produce energy
folate deficiency is a type of anaemia called megaloblastic anaemia
what is the function of vitamin C and what is the deficiency?
important for the formation of collagen
the deficiency of vitamin C is scurvy
what is the function of vitamin D and what is the deficiency?
important for increasing blood concentrations of calcium and phosphate
the deficiency of vitamin D is rickets and osteomalacia
