Vitamin C Flashcards
Vitamin C active form is known as
Ascorbic acid
Is vitamin C a reducing agent or an oxidising agent?
Reducing Agent
Deficiency of vitamin c can cause scurvy. What is scurvy?
A disease characterised by sore and spongy gums, loose teeth, fragile blood vessels, haemorrhage, swollen joints and bone changes.
Vitamin C function
Hydroxylation of prolyl and lysl residues in collagen
Vitamin C function related to iron
It keeps the iron in its reduced form (ferrous or Fe2+)
Facilitates the absorption of non heme iron from the intestine by reducing it.
Deficiency of Vitamin C causes Microcytic Anemia. What is the reason?
The iron absorption from the intestine is decreased.
Loose teeth, spongy gums, fatigue, swollen joints, bone changes, fragile blood vessels are the symptoms of scurvy. Why do these happen?
It happens due to decreased hydroxylation of the connective tissue.
