Q

V-A deficiency

A
  • night blindness-impaired production of rhodpsin, reversible
  • xerophthalmia- dryness of cornea, reversible
  • corneal ulceration/keratomalacia/blind- sof cornea, irreversible
  • hyperkaratosis-keratinized cells replace epithial cell, hair folicles plugged, bumpy/dry skin
  • impaired immunity- decreased resistance to infections

Q

V-A toxicity

A

none for carotenoids

  • performed A=inevitable- storage cont. until toxicity develops
    1) acute-short term, symptoms disappear when intake stops: GI headache, blurred vision, poor muscle coordination
    2) chronic- long term, possibly permanent: bone/muscle pain, skin disorder, no appetite, headache, fatigue, dry skin, increased liver size, vomiting
    3) teratogenic effect-3x RDA. physical defect on fetus
