Visuospatial Sketchpad - WMM Flashcards
What does the visuospatial sketchpad hold?
Information that we see.
What does the visuospatial sketchpad manipulate?
Spatial information.
What is spatial information?
Shapes, colours & positions of objects.
Capacity of the visuospatial sketchpad?
Around 3-4 objects.
Anything to do with spatial awareness uses?
The visuospatial sketchpad.
Where is the visuospatial sketchpad thought to be?
In the right hemisphere.
Why isn’t there much of a need to retain a lot of visual information in the STM?
Because visual information tends to last longer in a scene.
How does neurological evidence suggest that there is a (separate) visual and spatial memory?
If a visual span is disrupted, there are different issues than if a spatial span is disrupted.
What does the visuospatial sketchpad link to?
Non-verbal intelligence.
What are the 2 parts of the visuospatial sketchpad?
1) the visual cache
2) the inner scribe
What does the visual cache do?
It stores information about form and colour.
What does the inner scribe do?
It deals with retrieval and rehearsal.
What evidence is there that the visuospatial sketchpad is divided into 2 parts?
Biological evidence from studies of 2 types of patients who suffered damage to the right hemisphere.
There was visuospatial neglect in both.
One had normal visual memory but damaged visual attention.
The other had normal visual attention but problems with visual memory.
