Visual streams Flashcards
what is the function of the dorsal stream
“where” pathway
- uses vision for action guidance
what is the function of the ventrodorsal stream
visuomotor transformations for grasping
- also important for interpreting the actions of others
what is the function of the ventral stream
“what” pathway
- uses vision for perception (object recognition)
where does the ventral stream go
inferior temporal lobule
where does the dorsal stream go
superior parietal lobule
where does the ventrodorsal stream go
inferior parietal lobule
what can be caused by damage to the dorsal stream
optic ataxia
hemispatial neglect
- can be from stroke or physical trauma
what is optic ataxia
unable to use vision to guide reaching mvmts
- misdirected reach or misorientation of hand
what is hemispatial neglect
inability to process visual info from the contralateral side of the field of view
(contralateral side of image missing when asked to copy an image)
- can also extend to remembered images (representational neglect)
what can be caused by damage to the ventral stream of medioventral temporal cortex (where the ventral stream is)
form agnosia
visual object agnosia
- can be caused by stroke or physical trauma
what is form agnosia
selective impairments in object perception but intact control of actions
what is visual object agnosia
inability to recognise objects
- can replicate the image but can’t tell what it is at all
what can parietal lesions impair
body awareness
motor control
visual guidance of actions
spatial awareness and perception
what can temporal lesions impair
language comprehension
speech production
object recognition
which areas does damage to the dorsal stream affect
both the SPL and IPL
