visual perception Flashcards

parts of the eye

1
Q

cornea

A

A transparent membrane that protects the front of the eye. refracts 95% of lgiht to help focus light inside the eye.

Q

aqueous humour

A

the watery fluid that helps maintain the shape of the eye, keeps it hydrated, oxygenated and get rids of waste.

Q

A

coloured muscle that contracts and expands to control the size of the pupil, and let more/less light into the eye

Q

pupil

A

empty space/ the absence of the iris. Expands in low light conditions, retracts in high light conditions

Q

lens shape characteristics

A

transparent convex shape. located behind the iris, it changes shape to focus light on an image in the retina. cilliary muscles control changes to the shape

Q

what does lens do

A

focuses and bends light to focus it on the retina inverts the image we recieve but the brain turns it the right way up.
automatically contracts or relaxes depending on the distance. Bulges for closeness flattens for distance.

Q

virteous humour

A

jelly like substance to fill the space between the retina lining and the lens,

helps eyeball maintain shape

Q

RETINA

A

light sensitive membrane with layers of specialised neurons

at the back layer of the eye are rods and cones

Q

photo receptors

A

rods - night vision, low levels of light, poor at detecing detail, peripheral vision

cones - high levels of light, detects fine detail, colour vision

A

where the optic nerve meets the retina
theres no photo recpetiors no visual perception happens here

A

carries visual information from the retina to the occipital lobe in the brain for processing.
