attention Flashcards
top down proccessing
processing is where we start at the top, the brain, and cognitive functions guide your perception. Going down as more information is gathered. Mental processing driven.
bottom up proccessing
processing relies entirely on the sensory data and not previous data in your brain. Stimulus driven.
what are the two types of processing
bottom up processing
and top down processing
novel stimulus
a new or unusual stimulus
sensation
sensation is a passive process where our body detects stimuli and sends information to our brain to be interpreted.
what is perception
perception is the active proccess of assigning meaning to stimuli sensed.
selective attention
Selecting - which stimuli you want to pay attention to and ignoring less important or irrelevant stimuli
sustained attention
maintaining attention on a specific stimulus without being distracted
divided attention
ability to distribute our attention so two or more activities can be done at the same time
behaviour
refers to the visible actions we can see happening
mental process
refers to invisible, internal, cognitive activity in our mind. We can’t see it in others.
