Visual Fields- anatomy based Flashcards
What is meant by visual field?
Everything seen with one eye, including periphery
Fovea?
Point where visual acuity is highest
Which test assesses visual field?
Confrontation test or automated perimetry
(different to visual acuity testing e.g. using letters and seeing the smallest font you can read).
What does visual field testing involve?
Patient covers eye and informs you when they can see your hand coming towards you
Where do all fibres from the eyes pass through?
Pass through the optic nerve
After fibres pass through the optic nerve, where do they go?
To the optic chiasma
Which part of the brain does the optic tract go into?
Thalamus
If you see something in your left visual field, how is it shown in the brain?
Projected into the right cerebral hemisphere. Also flipped and inverted.
What happens if a patient presents with damaged right optic nerve?
Blindness in left eye
What would happen if the optic chiasma is disrupted in the middle?
Bitemporal hemianopia
(can see temporal visual fields but not nasal visual fields- basically half blindness in both eyes).
What would happen if the right optic tract became damaged?
Left homonymous hemianopia
(cannot see left side of the visual field- half blindness).
What would happen if the optic radiation is damaged?
Left homonymous hemianopia
If there is complete blindness in the left eye, what is damaged?
Left optic nerve
(something wrong with whole of retina)
What is hydrocephalus?
Abnormal accumulation of CSF in the ventricles of the brain
