Visual Design Principle #1 - Spacing
Have areas without content (whitespace)
Margins, gutters, column spacing, etc.
Macro white space
Space between major layout elements (margin)
Helps with control of information
Micro white space
Space within content elements (line spacing)
Visual Design Principle #2 - Grouping
There should be space between unrelated items, and related items should be in close proximity
Law of Proximity
People perceive things that are close together as related to one another
Visual Design Principle #3 - Simplicity
Don’t overwhelm users with visual clutters
- Hide infrequently used information
- Provide clean default interface

Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity
Contrast
Color, weight, size, shape
Repetition
Maintain consistency in ways of presenting information
Alignment
Place elements in association with some invisible guidelines
Proximity
Place related objects in groups with one another
