Inclusive Design Flashcards
Inclusive Design
Design optimized for users with specific needs
Personalization vs. customization
Personalization - Done by the system
Customization - Done by the user
Steps of Cognitive Walkthrough
- Identify users, sample tasks
- Gather designers and UX researchers
- Walk through action sequence for each task
- Compile results, suggest improvements
- Revise design
Questions to ask during cognitive walkthrough
a. Will the user try to achieve the right result?
b. Will the user notice the correct option is available?
c. Will the user associate the correct action w/ desired outcome?
d. Will the user see that progress has been made?
Pluralistic Walkthrough
A variation of walkthrough that involves a panel of users, developers and UX researchers
Predictive Models
The user of formulas to derive various measures of performance
Fitts’ Law
MT = a + b(log2(D/W))
MT - average movement time
a, b are constants depending on input device
D - distance from starting position to target center
W - width of target measure along axis of rotation
Control-Display ratio
The ratio between the movement of an input device and the corresponding movement of the object it controls
GOMS
Goals, Operators, Methods, Selection rules
Goals (GOMS)
The main objective of a task or state the user wants to achieve
Operators (GOMS)
Cognitive and physical actions required to achieve the goal
Methods (GOMS)
Learned procedures for accomplishing the goal
There can be many methods for a single goal
Selection rules (GOMS)
Specification for which method should be used
KLM
Keystroke Level Model - A simplified version of GOMS that provides numerical predictions of user performance
Web Analytics
Analyzing user behavior in the background, usually achieved by injecting some script
