Emotional Design Flashcards
Why emotions are important in design
Positive emotions/satisfaction can lead to more purchases
Negative emotions can lead to more mistakes
Emotional Design
The design of technology that can engender desired emotional states
The 3 levels of emotional design
- Visceral
- Behavioral
- Reflective
Visceral level of ED
Physical features which directly affect a person’s perception of a system/object
Behavioral level of ED
Utility and functionality of design
Practical/functional qualities
Reflective level of ED
Overall impression of design on user
Concerned with culture, meaning, prestige, etc.
Expressive Interfaces
Interfaces with features that create emotional connections or elicit certain emotional responses
Examples: Using emojis, animations, sounds, etc. in an interface
Affective Computing
Using computers to recognize and express emotions
Anthropomorphism
Human tendency to assign human qualities to objects - talk to them, give them pet names, etc.
Uncanny Valley
Things that look almost, but not quite human can be unsettling
Persuasive Technologies
Interactive computing systems designed to change people’s attitudes
Operant Conditioning
Consequences of behavioral feedback on user
Positive reinforcements
Presentation of rewards as a consequence of behavior
Negative reinforcements
Removal of existing stimulus as result of action
Punishment
Presentation of a stimulus as a consequence of the behavior
