Snellen requirements
20/40 bilateral & in each eye
If corrected, must be separately corrected
Visual field exam
Passing = 70° in horizontal meridian in each eye
Monocular vision
DQ’d unless exemption is applied for and granted
Exemptions good for 2 years, can only cert for 1 year
Monocular vision exemption
≈2k drivers grandfathered into continual exemption s/p study from 1992-1996
Must get annual eye exams from ophtho
Cataracts
Slowly progressive lens opacification that distorts light passage
Decreased acuity, contrast, and color
Glaucoma
Decreased peripheral d/t optic nerve atrophy r/t unregulated IOP
Smelled usually normal
Macular degeneration
Decreased detailed central vision
Snellen usually impaired, peripheral fine
Telescopic lenses are not okay for driving
Retinopathy
Non-inflammatory retinal damage
Usually d/t DM
Hearing tests
Forced whisper or audiometric
Just have to pass one
Audiometric hearing test
Passing = no greater than 40dB average hearing loss, bilaterally, at different levels (2000 Hz, 1000 Hz, 500 Hz)
Vertigo
WP = 2 months if asymptomatic and initial dx is BPV or acute/chronic peripheral vestibulopathy
Max cert = 2 years
DQ-ing hearing conditions
- Uncontrolled vertigo
- Meniere’s dz
- Labyrinthine fistula
- Non-fxnal labyrinths
