visceral motor nuclei Flashcards
all parasympathetic, get sympathetic innervation from spinal cord
visceral motor nuclei
how many visceral motor nuclei are there?
9
- sends signals out to the vagus and on to viscera
- does everything in the parasympathetic system down to the transverse colon
dorsal motor nuclei of the vagus
- goes to facial and has a contribution to glossopharyngeal
- responsible for innervation of the lacrimal ducts, the submaxillary, and sublingual salivary glands, and pharynx
- basic two neuron chain using acetylcholine
- part of PNS
superior salivary nucleus
- goes to parotid gland
- two neuron chain using acetylocholine
inferior salivatory nucleus
- send signal to oculomotor which innervates the instrinsic smooth muscles of the eye (iris and lens)
edinger westphal nuclei
- innervates the face
- migrates from inside neural tube toward outside
- facial muscles, larynx and some neck come from gill slits – striated
branchiomotor nuclei / special visceral efferent
what are the nerves of the SVE nuclei?
glossopharyngeal, facial, vagus
- part of the cervical spinal cord
- innervates muscles of the neck
spinal nuclei of the spinal accessory
- undefined edges
- sends axons down to cranial nerves IX and X
- none are two neuron chains
- no sympathetic nervous system
nucleus ambiguus
- axons go to cranial nerve VII (facial expression)
- damage here causes Bell’s palsy
facial motor nucleus
- axons go to cranial nerve V
- no sympathetic innervation
- acetylcholine
trigeminal motor nucleus
which 3 stem nuclei are not accounted for?
VIII
II
I
- starts at neocortex from lower 1/3 of motor cortex (Brodmann 4)
- travels down to brain stem
- upper motor neuron
- once they synapse at brain stem, becomes lower motor neuron
corticobullar tract
