Viruses Flashcards
What is a capsid
Similar to a nucleus
Contains virus’s genetic material (this could be DNA or RNA)
What is the viral envelope
Made from fatty lipid molecules which are taken from cells in the host
It protects the inside of the cell
What are attachment proteins
Help the virus recognise and bind to cells in the host organism
What is viral genetic information
DNA or RNA
Contains the information for making new copies of the virus
Stage 1 of the virus lifecyle
Once the virus particle reaches a vulnerable host cell, it attaches to it using surface proteins
Stage 2 of the virus lifecyle
The virus genetic information (DNA or RNA depending on the virus) goes inside the host cell
Stage 3 of the virus lifecyle
The virus DNA or RNA takes over the host cell machinery and makes lots of copies of itself
Stage 4 of the virus lifecyle
After the virus has replicated, the new virus particles break from the host cell and can go on infecting more cells
