Specialised Cells Flashcards
Define tissue
Collection of similar cells working together to perform a specific function
Define organ
Collection of similar tissues which combine their properties for a specific function
Define organ system
A range of tissues and organs that work together to perform vital functions
How do cells work together
In multicellular organisms groups of cells are specialised for certain roles
This helps the organism to have better survival qualities in the environment
Function of a squamous epithelial cell
Short diffusion distance so quick diffusion rate
Reduces friction and aids blood flow
Structure of squamous epithelial cell
One layer of thin, flat epithelial cells
Found at exchange surfaces
Smooth surface
Function of ciliated columnar epithelium
Cilia sweep away mucus and particles
Structure of ciliated columnar epithelium
Rectangular shape
Have 200-300 hair like protrusions called cilia
Lots of mitochondria
Nucleus located towards base of cell so it doesn’t get knocked away
Function of red blood cell
Allows haemoglobin to bind with o2 and be carried around the body
Structure of red blood cell
Circular shape
Bioconcave disc with no nucleus allowing RBCs to change shape and flow around vessels
Function of sperm cell
Fertilise the egg
Structure of sperm cell
Long tail, large head containing digestive enzymes
Function of a plant palisade cell
Carries out photosynthesis
Structure of plant palisade cell
Many chloroplasts in top layer for lots of photosynthesis
Structure of white blood cell
Lymphocytes - large nucleus, many mitochondria and ribosomes
Phagocytes - lobed nucleus
