Viruses Flashcards
An intracellular, infectious parasite capable of replicating only in living cells, containing only one form of nucleic acid
Dermatropic viruses
Virus
Causes Smallpox
-Fever, pustular skin rash / lesions, permanent scarring
-Spread via respiratory system or contact with lesions
-Can lead to organ and system drainage
-Vaccine available
Dermatropic viruses
Variola virus
Causes chicken pox and shingles
-Herpes virus
Dermatropic viruses
Varicella Zoster virus
-Rash, fluid filled blisters, lesions, and fever
-Spread via the respiratory system or contact with lesions
-Can lead to bacterial infection, pneumonia, encephalitis, sepsis, and hemorrhaging
Dermatropic viruses
Chickenpox
-Associated with painful rash
-Occurs when the Varicella Zoster virus remains latent in the body and is later reactivated
-Not communicable in this form
Dermatropic viruses
Shingles
Causes measles
-Associated with respiratory symptoms, fever, and a rash
-Spreads via respiratory system
-Highly contagious
-Vaccine available
Dermatropic viruses
Rubeola virus
Causes Rubella or German measles
-Associated with respiratory symptoms, a rash, and a fever
-Spread via the respiratory system or from mom to fetus
-A more mild version of the measles caused by the Rubeola virus
-May be associated with arthritis, brain infection, and bleeding problems
-Vaccine available
Dermatropic viruses
Rubella virus
Causes cold sores, corneal infections, and genital herpes
-Spread via oral contact
-Symptoms are likely to recur
-May also be associated with a fever, headache, and body aches
Dermatropic viruses
Herpes Simplex Virus Type I
Causes genital herpes
-Spread via sexual contact
Dermatropic viruses
Herpes Simplex virus II
Causes human papilloma virus
-Low risk virus causes genital warts
-High risk virus is linked to cervical cancer
-Spread via sexual contact
-Often asymptomatic
-Often goes away on it’s own
-Vaccine available
Dermatropic viruses
Human Papilloma virus (HPV)
Causes the flu
-Associated with respiratory symptoms, fever, muscle and body aches, and headaches
-Several types (A and B usually cause seasonal epidemics
-Spread via respiratory systems and fomites
Pneumotropic viruses
Influenza virus
-Can be caused by more than 200 viruses
-Most commonly caused by Rhinoviruses and coronaviruses
-Associated with respiratory symptoms
Pneumotropic viruses
Common cold viruses
Causes rabies
-Transmitted via saliva or brain/ nervous system tissue from an infected animal
-Begins with flu-like symptoms and progresses to cerebral disfunction, mental symptoms, abnormal behavior, hydrophobia, hallucinations, and muscle spasms
-Eventually will effect the respiratory muscles and cause the person to asphyxiate
-Once clinical symptoms occur, the disease is almost always fatal
Neurotropic viruses
Rabies virus
Lyssavirus, Rhabdoviridae
Causes Polio or poliomyelitis
-Begins with flu-like symptoms that may progress to meningitis and/or paralysis
-Spread via respiratory system or digestive system
-Very contagious
-Vaccine available
Neurotropic viruses
Polio virus
-Inflammation of the brain and may be associated with flu-like symptoms, headaches, seizures, cognitive changes, and behavioral changes
-Most commonly caused by herpes simplex virus, West Nile virus, enteroviruses, Varicella Zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, and cytomegalovirus
-May also be associated to rubeola, rubella, and the rabies virus
Neurotropic viruses
Viral Encephalitis virus
