Immunology Flashcards
A foreign substance that stimulates the formation for antibodies that react specifically with it
Antigen
Glycoprotein substance developed by the body in response to, and interacting specifically with, an antigen
Antibody (Immunoglobulin)
Immunity that an individual is born with (non specific immunity)
-Include the skin and mucus membranes, other surface barriers, proteins and phagocytic cells (macrophages and neutrophils)
Innate immunity (natural immunity)
Individual either forms antibodies to a pathogen or is given antibodies to a pathogen
Acquired immunity (Adaptive immunity)
White blood cells that are involved with immune response (in acquired immunity specifically)
-B cells produce antibodies that attack invaders
-T cells activate immune response
Lymphocytes
Cells that produce antibodies that attack invaders (type of lymphocytes)
B cells
Cells that activate immune response (type of lymphocytes)
T cells
Result of the placental transfer of antibodies in the uterus or through the mother’s first breast mild (colostrum)
Naturally acquired passive immunity
Result of developing a disease and recovering from it
Naturally acquired active immunity
Result of injection of antibodies (via immune serums)
Artificially acquired passive immunity
Result of receiving a vaccine
Artificially acquired active immunity
