Virus/Classification Flashcards
Virus
an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host.
Pathogen
a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
Capsid
another term for mirid.
Glycoprotein
any of a class of proteins that have carbohydrate groups attached to the polypeptide chain. Also called glycopeptide.
Bacteriophage
type of virus that infects bacteria. In fact, the word “bacteriophage” literally means “bacteria eater,” because bacteriophages destroy their host cells.
Lytic Cycle
is one of the two cycles of viral reproduction
Lysogenic Cycle
Lysogeny, or the lysogenic cycle, is one of two cycles of viral reproduction (the lytic cycle being the other).
Vaccine
a substance used to stimulate the production of antibodies and provide immunity against one or several diseases, prepared from the causative agent of a disease, its products, or a synthetic substitute, treated to act as an antigen without inducing the disease.
Antibiotic
Any substance that inhibits the growth and replication of a bacterium or kills it outright can be called an antibiotic.
Taxonomy
the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematics.
Binomial Nomenclature
the system of nomenclature in which two terms are used to denote a species of living organism, the first one indicating the genus and the second the specific epithet.
Dichotomous Key
A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish.
