Ecology Flashcards
Limiting Factor
anything which prevents rapid population growth.
Abiotic Factor
the living part of the environment
Biotic Factor
the non-living parts of the environment
Symbiotic Relationship
close permanent associations between species.
Mutualism
Both species will benefit from the relationship
Parasitism
One species benefits (the parasite) and the other is harmed (the host).
Commensalism
One species benefits, the other isn’t affected at all.
Predation
Predation is a biological interaction where one organism, the predator, kills and eats another organism, its prey.
Autotraph
An organism that makes its own food.
Heterotroph
Organisms that get energy directly or indirectly from plants
Decomposer
Animals which feed on decaying organic matter (rotting plants and animals). Examples: earthworms, fungus, some bacteria
Succession
a series of changes in a community in which new populations of organisms gradually replace existing ones
Food Web
A food web shows all the different food chains in an ecosystem.
Energy Pyramid
Shows the movement of energy through an ecosystem
