single stranded DNA virus
must locate to nucleus, use host DNA poly to make double stranded DNA and the use host DNA poly to make single stranded DNA, use host RNA poly and ribosome
double stranded RNA virus
replicates in cytoplasm, uses VIRAL RNA poly/replicase to make double stranded DNA, uses VIRAL poly/transcriptase to make single stranded and HOST ribosome
single stranded RNA (-) virus
replicates in cytoplasm, uses VIRAL poly/transcriptase to make single stranded (+) mRNA, uses VIRAL replicase to make single stranded (-) mRNA genome from single stranded (+) mRNA, ribosomes use single stranded (+) mRNA
single stranded RNA (+) virus
replicates in cytoplasm, uses VIRAL RNA poly/replicase twice, uses HOST ribosome
RNA (+) retrovirus
repliactes nucleus to be incorporated into chromosomes, uses VIRAL reverse transcriptase to make negative single stranded DNA and to make double stranded DNA, VIRAL integrase, uses HOST RNA poly. uses HOST RNA poly to make viral mRNA and HOST ribosome
Monocistronic
single large polypeptide synthesized, needs to be cut by viral protease into functional components
polycistronic
viral mRNA with multiple genes translated into 1 or more polypeptides, proteases cleave these as well as to achieve separate functional units
Virus assembly
capsids are assembled around the genome, envelopes acquired (if needed) during budding
enveloping
matrix proteins for negative RNA strand viruses promote adhesion of nucleocapsid with the glyoprotein modified membrane
capsid
protein shell that surrounds nucleic acid
nucleocapsid
capsid + nucleic acid
envelope
modified host cell membrane that wraps around nucleocapsid. proteins on envelope are viral proteins
Naked virus
only capsid, stable to environment factors, survive long term both in body and outside the body, are more serious
Enveloped viruses
have membrane that obtained from host cell membrane, can only survive in wet environments, are susceptible to acid, detergents, drying and heat, if enveloped damaged can no longer infect
