enveloped(SEM), ss + RNA, very large genome, looks like RNA, no polymerase, capsid
clinical presentation of coronavirus
common cold (upper respiratory tract infection): sore throat, runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing coughing muscle aches, fatigue, headache
pathogenesis of coronavirus
infects epithelial cells (vacuolated, damage cilia, syncytia) of upper respiratory tract.
epidemiology
10-15% upper respriatory infections, glycoprotein “corona” helps survive gastrointestinal tract and transmit via fecal route, aerosol, hand to hand. late winter early spring
SARS associated coronavirus
Severe acute respiratory syndrome. respiratory droplets, high fever, pneumonia. Lytic-> diffuse alveolar damage.
clinical presentation of SARS
high fever, headache, discomfort, body aches, diarrhea (maybe), dry cough, pneumonia
